Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said he is “embarrassed” by the team’s record and said it was a “big disappointment” to see the team lose to No. 3 Virginia in the ACC Tournament final.
The Blue Devils lost to the Blue Devils on Saturday for the second time in three games.
Krzyzanowski said that despite the loss, he is hopeful that Duke will bounce back from a disappointing season that included a season-ending knee injury and a season ending back surgery.
Krzyzanewski, whose team finished second in the conference in points per game, said the team has to play a “full and full season.”
He also said he thinks the team needs to be “bigger and better.”
“We can’t sit here and say we’re not better than we were last year, we’re still going to have to be better than last year,” Krzyziwczewski said.
“We have to get to the point where we’re better than this year, and we need to get better, and that’s going to take us a long time to do.”
“This team, for a while, was just struggling.
It was a real disappointment to see it,” Krzanowski added.”
I’m disappointed for them, I’m disappointed that it wasn’t a great win, but at the same time, I can’t take it personally, it’s not a big disappointment for me.””
I am so proud of our team, the guys on this team.
I think the guys have really played well,” Krzezewski continued.
“We’re not playing well right now, but I’m proud of them.”
The Blue Demons (16-9, 8-6 ACC) were expected to be one of the conference’s top teams heading into the season.
But they finished with the worst offensive rebounding record in the nation and finished third in the league in field goal percentage defense.
Duke had only one rebound off Virginia’s six 3-pointers.
Kruszewski also said that the team should not get too complacent and that the coaching staff needs to stay focused.
“That’s not the best way to say it, but we have to make sure we stay focused, not just mentally but physically,” Krzewski added.
“That’s the key, it has to be physical, and I’m very proud of that.
I know they’ve been doing that.”
The ACC Tournament is set to begin on Friday, March 11.
